Any one of us may break down if we experience enough stress. When conditions of overwhelming stress occur, even a previously stable individual may develop temporary psychological problems. An individual will usually recover easily once the stressful situation is over, although in some cases, there may be long-lasting effects resulting in an increased feeling of vulnerability, anxiousness and/or hyper-vigilance that can interfere with daily routines and relationships. Symptoms of anxiety are feelings of restlessness or feeling on edge, feeling fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension and/or sleep disruption.
Sometimes exposure to social situations or other situations such as flying or sitting in a passenger seat can provoke anxiety for an individual. This can seriously affect their personal and professional relationships and seriously interrupt their daily life. Anxiety responses to these types of situations are usually referred to as phobic responses. In some cases, exposure to a phobic causing situation can bring on a panic attack where an individual may feel a pounding heart, trembling feelings of choking, chest discomfort and/or hot flashes to name a few symptoms.
Then, there is post traumatic stress disorder also known as PTSD. PTSD can be experienced by people exposed to accidents, fires, earthquakes, and sexual assaults who frequently experience psychological “shock” reactions and show signs of stress after the incident.
The symptoms of PTSD occur after a trauma. People with this disorder might experience anxiety ranging from mild to sever anxiety when situations are presented that recall the traumatic event. There are often times chronic tension and irritability, fatigue and insomnia. Often, persons experiencing PTSD will experience nightmares that directly or symbolically represent the traumatic incident. Other symptoms include lack of concentration, memory loss and feeling of depression.
Intervention right after the trauma can greatly reduce the chances of an individual experiencing PTSD. It is important for the individual to talk about the event as much as they need to.
Intervention through anxiety treatment counseling can greatly reduce the symptoms for these individuals. Seeking out a licensed Los Angeles psychotherapist who treats anxiety issues such as Dr. James E. Walton could be helpful for them to find their way back to the road of recovery.
